In 1781, General John Stark gave his famous “Live free or die” speech in Concord before leading his forces into battle against the British during the Revolutionary War.

Laconia is the largest city on the lake, with a population of approximately 17,025 residents. Laconia has become famous for its annual “Motorcycle Weekend” at Weirs Beach. Wolfeboro is the oldest resort town in America, settled in 1763. Gilford, with a population of 6,377, is known for its beaches and Gunstock Ski Area, as well as the Bank of NH music pavilion. Alton has the smallest number of people at 2,035 residents. Center Harbor is centrally located between Meredith and Moultonborough on Route 25 at the western end of Lake Winnipesaukee. Moultonborough has about 66 miles of shoreline, and Alton has 33 miles.
