Some of the girls from my office called me out this weekend to take pictures of this exciting event. I was hesitant, it was the first time I saw an event of this type. Exciting and fun! Lots of spectators and cars circling a large circular race track plowed out on Berry Pond in Moultonborough just before the airport. Breathtaking mountains in the background, add the roar of the track high as performance modified race cars speed sideways around corners. Hard to imagine how these drivers can see where they’re going. Literally, it was like having five snow guns positioned at each turn in the track.
There are roughly 50 drivers with a huge variety of cars and trucks participating in 5 different classes and lots of trophies to raise money to fight cancer. The annual Latchkey Cup race is presented by the Lakes Region Ice Racing Club and has raised more than $212,000 for cancer research since its inception! The club’s points races are held every Sunday at 12:30pm from approximately January to March as long as there is a minimum of 12” of ice. Burgers, hot dogs, and hot coffee are offered at one of the vendors. Dress warm or drive your car right out onto the lake around the track to view the laps. These kids and adults really know how to have a good time. They love racing and it’s amazing to see some of the work that has gone into the drivers’ cars engines and chains. Imagine viewing the pit crews on icy Berry Pond! Another great event for the Lakes Region during the winter months!
